- 2012 FRSC Meeting Gets Underway
The 2012 Forum Regional Security Committee (FRSC) Meeting was opened this morning by Forum Secretary General, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, at the Forum’s Headquarters in Suva, Fiji. H.E. Ms Amaitlin Kabua, Ambassador of the Republic of Marshall Islands to Fiji, is chairing the FRSC. In welcoming Forum Officials to the meeting, the Secretary General emphasised the importance of the work of the FRSC noting “time and experience has shown that in the absence of a secured environment, the effective functioning and well being of a society, including economic growth and development, is simply not possible.” Recognising also from collective regional experience that certain security challenges are better addressed cooperatively, Secretary General Slade acknowledged the “immense contribution of our civil society partners to peace building, conflict prevention, and promoting and protecting human rights.” The FRSC meeting will be held in two sessions, as agreed by Forum Leaders under the 1997 Aitutaki Declaration. Session One will meet on Wednesday 6 June while Session Two, which is a closed session, will meet on Thursday 7 June. Over the next two days, the Forum Regional Security Committee will discuss a wide range of issues relating to regional security, as well as regional and national progress in implementing the security mandates of the Forum, including under the Security and Governance Pillar of the Pacific Plan, and the Honiara, Biketawa, and Nasonini Declarations. The FRSC will also hear from Regional Law Enforcement and Legal Agencies, and CROP Agencies on their respective activities pertinent to the work of the Committee.
