Private Sector Not Immune to Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Stacey O’Nea is the Chief Executive Officer for the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry (POMCCI). She attended the Regional Gender Equality and Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Policy and Budget Monitoring Capacity Building Program organised by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in 2020,  her first foray into a formal “gender-based violence” dialogue space.

She shares her experience from the workshop and how she uses the lessons in her work.

This training supported Stacey  in initiating a public and private partnership initiative through the POMCCI and the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), to address and strengthen the Capital city’s private sector response to the national issue of gender-based violence.

Her interview with PIFS also included POMCCI GBV lawyer, Ceaser Kata and the Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee (FSVAC) Manager for NCDC, Ruth Beriso.

" We are so grateful for this partnership. I think it's first of its kind for us - for the public and private partnership to have this collaboration with POMCCI. We are so thankful to the president, also the CEO as well. She's has been able to get a lawyer to assist us.  NCDC has also made a commitment to come on board, to partner with POMCCI. So, working hand in hand to address gender-based violence"

Through the Pacific Partnership to End Violence Against Women and Girls (Pacific Partnership), the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat empowers national and regional civil society organisations (CSOs) to advocate, monitor and report on regional institutions and governments commitments to enhance gender equality and prevent violence against women and girls.

The Pacific Partnership is funded primarily by the European Union, and the Governments of Australia and New Zealand, and UN Women, and is led by the Pacific Community (SPC), UN Women and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
