This week sees the beginning of the Pacific Islands Forum’s programme of Regional Policy Consultations for 2019. The programme running through February to the end of April will see discussions held in the 18 member countries involving Leaders and Ministers, senior officials, civil society and the private sector.
“Last year’s dialogues were successful, and extremely valuable to the Secretariat in terms of discussing national perspectives on important regional issues, including security and climate change, and ensuring Forum work is closely informed by the views offered by our members. “I look forward to beginning the 2019 consultations in Vanuatu, and continuing the open, constructive and inclusive dialogue our Blue Pacific region is known for over the coming months,” says Pacific Islands Forum, Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor.
Emerging issues likely to be covered in the discussions this year include the renewed focus on Pacific geo-politics, security and stability issues including West Papua, and increasing concerns around the trade in, and impact of, illegal drugs such as methamphetamine, in the region.
“Forum Leaders have said very clearly that when we work together as one Blue Pacific continent, we must be informed by Pacific people, and ensure that Pacific people are the beneficiaries of our work. This ideal is very important to the Forum, our members, and the staff from the Secretariat who will support the consultations. “I welcome Members’ active participation in this process in 2019 and to ensuring your voices are reflected in the development of regional policies,” said Dame Meg Taylor.
