PIF Sec, Suva, September 23, 2022--The Pacific Islands Forum will observe Nauru’s General Election, Saturday 24 September 2022.
The Pacific Islands Forum Election Observer Team is led by His Excellency Mr Feue Tipu, High Commissioner of Tuvalu to New Zealand supported by staff of the Forum Secretariat.
Speaking from Nauru, High Commissioner Tipu welcomed the opportunity to observe and highlighted Nauru’s excellent track record on inviting the international community to observe its elections.
“We’re very happy to be back in Nauru, supporting good governance at the ballot box. No Forum Member has invited the Forum more than Nauru to observe its elections demonstrating its commitment to democracy - it is an amazing feat that must be commended." he said.
This is the sixth Forum Observer Mission to Nauru, having previously observed in 2004, 2008, 2010, 2016 and 2019.
Secretary General Puna also acknowledged Nauru’s longstanding commitment to strengthening democracy, saying, “It means a lot that Forum members open themselves up to scrutiny in support of good governance and in pursuit of the lofty ideals of the Pacific Islands Forum which is to improve the lives of our people through sound democratic processes.”
Forum election observer missions are carried out under the 2000 Biketawa Declaration and act as an independent source of analysis in the conduct and integrity of a Forum Members’ general elections. They also serve to instill confidence in election stakeholders, the people and voters of Nauru, that an independent Pacific presence is in-country to support democracy. --ENDS
