The Pacific Leaders Gender Equality Declaration (PLGED) was announced at the 43rd Pacific Islands Forum in August 2012 in Rarotonga, driven by concerns from Pacific Leaders that despite incremental and important steps over the decades, overall progress in the region towards achieving gender equality was slow. Through the declaration, Leaders renewed commitment to lifting the status of women in the Pacific and empowering them to be active participants in economic, political, and social life, specifically in the areas of gender-responsive government programmes and policies, decision making, economic empowerment, ending violence against women, and health and education.
In 2021, an independent review of the PLGED was undertaken to improve the effectiveness and relevance of the Declaration for Members to progress gender equality in our Blue Pacific Continent. The review outcomes are intended to support the Pacific region to take stronger action and accelerate efforts to address gender inequalities.
The PLGED Review Report is comprehensive, covering pertinent highlights and recommendations.
Whilst there is no denying the importance and relevance of the 2012 PLGED as a high-level commitment made by our Leaders, strengthening implementation, collaboration, and coordination is required if the Declaration is to serve its intended purpose-- hence this report.
