SG Slade visits RMI and FSM

The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, met with Leaders and senior ministers of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) during the week of 7 to 11 May 2012. Federated States of Micronesia In Pohnpei, Secretary General Slademet with the President of FSM, H.E. Emanuel Mori, and the Vice President, H.E. Alik L. Alik. Secretary General Slade took the opportunity to congratulate FSM on their successful application under the Pacific Environment Community (PEC) Fund of US$4 million to supplement electricity generation through solar energy to the four different states of FSM. A broad range of other issues were discussed, including arrangements for the upcoming meeting of Pacific Leaders in Japan (PALM 6), arrangements for the 2012 Pacific Islands Forum to be held in the Cook Islands in August, the recent visit to Fiji by the Forum Ministerial Contact Group (MCG), FSM’s efforts in relation to the Millennium Development Goals, the progress of PACER Plus discussions and implementation of the Pacific Islands Countries Trade Agreement (‘PICTA’). Republic of the Marshall Islands In Majuro, Secretary General Slade met with the President of RMI H.E. Christopher J. Loeak and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Phillip Muller. Secretary General Slade congratulated the President on the development of RMI’s first Trade Policy Framework, which was subsequently launched at the 2012 Forum Trade Ministers’ Meeting on Friday 11th May in Majuro. Further discussions were held around the recent visit to RMI by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights, obligations related to environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and waste, and RMI’s concerns about the impacts of climate change. The Secretary General also briefed the President and Minister on arrangements for PALM 6, the 2012 Pacific Islands Forum to be held in the Cook Islands, and the MCG visit to Fiji.
