Taiwan/Republic of China and Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat Sign Cooperation Agreement

Suva, Fiji  - Taiwan/Republic of China (ROC) and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat today signed a Cooperation Agreement supporting capacity building initiatives in the region. 

An annual grant of US $1 million is provided by Taiwan/ROC towards a scholarship scheme for Forum Island Country citizens to undertake studies in the region and other initiatives. 

Jessica Chienyi Lee, Representative of the Trade Mission of Taiwan/ROC to Fiji handed the funds to Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor. Scholarship recipients from previous intakes were present at the ceremony and acknowledged the support of Taiwan/ROC and the Forum Secretariat in pursuing higher education. 

Since 2001, 183 recipients have pursued studies in the areas of commerce, medicine, carpentry, engineering, marine science, information systems and agriculture to help advance key sustainable development priorities in member countries. 

This year will see a first for the scheme as some recipients will travel to Taiwan/ROC to undertake their tertiary studies. 

The call for applications for the 2020 Scholarship Scheme intake is expected to commence in September 2019 and will be publicised on www.forumsec.org and social media channels. [ENDS]
