The Representative of the Trade Mission of Taiwan/Republic of China (ROC) based in Suva, Fiji, Ms Jane Cheng, handed over a total of US$ one million at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat today.
The US$500,000 will be for the implementation of regional projects under the 2012 Regional Development Assistance programme, and the remaining US$ 500,000 for the 2012/2013 Taiwan/ROC-Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) Scholarship Scheme.
The Taiwan/ROC-PIFS scholarship scheme will allow the Secretariat to award at least ten scholarships to students across the region. The Taiwan/ROC Regional Development Assistance contribution will cover ten projects which will be implemented by the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP).
These agencies include College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science, Fiji National University; Pacific Aviation Safety Office; Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency; Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat; Pacific Power Association; Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme and The University of the South Pacific (USP).
The Secretariat expressed its appreciation to Taiwan/ROC for its continued support to the region. The Regional Development Assistance programme has assisted in the successful implementation of regional projects by CROP agencies.
The Secretariat also thanked the Taiwan/ROC for the Taiwan/ROC-PIFS Scholarship scheme which has supported students from the region gain higher education qualifications from recognised tertiary institutions in the region and Taiwan/ROC.
The funding assistance will cover the implementation of regional projects in areas of education, data and information management, marine pollution, fisheries, capacity building and training, renewable energy and activities pertaining to the smaller island states programme. -Ends-
